holy trade deadline, batman!

i seem to recall last year's trade deadline coming and going without much fuss. this year is totally different! pudge, manny, teixeira, junior and more. good night nurse!

i am pretty glad to see kyle farnsworth go back to detroit. i never liked the guy (except for his hot arms) and he's so erratic. his outings were totally unpredictable. i don't think i quite understand why detroit would take him for pudge, straight up. that seems like a bad deal for them but i've got no complaints. and manny is out of the al east, and out of the al in general. that is pretty damn sweet. it sucks that he's joe torre's problem now though. haha poor joe! the angels are starting to scare me. they have A LOT of awesome players. i hope they find some way to fall apart though.

i have more thoughts on this subject but i'm super tired and distracted so this is kind of all over the place. probably a waste of everyone's time but whatevs.

a life lesson

don't leave a bar without closing your tab if your best friend/roommate and arch nemesis are staying at said bar for the rest of the night and they know that your tab is still open.

day by'day

last night we made up a drinking game to go along with the movie wet hot american summer. i can't remember everything but here's a try. drink every time:
  • the camp counselors do something bad
  • a jewish reference is made
  • glass breaking sound plays
  • someone hooks up
  • they show the time on the screen
  • henry responds inappropriately to something beth has said
  • amy poehler mentions the talent show
  • they talk about after camp
  • someone mentions mckinnley's love life
  • gene says something creepy
  • a body of water is shown
  • the campers participate in a typical camp activity
  • food is shown
so, we obviously wrote the list then watched the movie. there is probably some editing that needs to take place because it was A LOT of drinking.

after the movie we headed to mohawk. i guess it was still early but we weren't feeling the karaoke stuff. the drinks were expensive and the singing sucked. soooo we headed to creekside. shocking. some trashy ass blonde girl wearing hotpants who was making out with her ugly boyfriend for like 20 minutes threw her empty GLASS behind carlos onto the dirt/rocks out back at the bar. seriously, she threw a glass? so when they were walking by i yelled, "nice manners!" to her and her boyfriend turned around and gave me the stare down. i'm really scared of you, guy in a lonestar light trucker hat. after they left carlos informed me that he wouldn't mind getting into a fight. had i known that, i would have talked a lot more shit to those people :)

my boys rage

if you watch my boys but haven't been watching this season, you might not want to read this rant. also, if you have never seen my boys you probably don't want to read this either because i bet it would be really boring.

i am having major issues with the second season of my boys that is now airing on tbs. it's only the second season and things are already ridiculous. hardly anyone works anymore. pj doesn't make ANY baseball analogies. bobby is getting married. it seemed like andy was going to cheat on meredith. mike is even more annoying that ever. kenny is a ladies' man? stephanie sucks at life yet she is a "relationship guru." i'm gonna break these down a little, i think.

  • until tonight's episode, the only person that ever "worked" was andy and even that was questionable. he was just the only one that talked about work. everyone else seems to be on permanent vacation.
  • naturally, one of the things that drew me into the show was that pj is a sports writer. i think that's a great setup for a sitcom. during her narratives she used to always make comparisons about her life to baseball. i don't think she has done that once since the second season started.
  • bobby is marrying andy's nanny because her visa or green card or whatthefuckever expired. he says he's marrying her because he loves her and it feels right. i think it feels rushed. and i also think that bobby and pj belong together. duh.
  • the nia vardalos character sucks. the whole story line sucks. andy has this friend from work named joe. except it's really jo. jo's a woman! jo and andy spend way too much time together. jo clearly has a crush on andy and andy's being a douche about the whole thing. i really thought for a second that he was going to cheat on meredith.
  • mike. seriously. shut. the. fuck. up. his character has always had a sort of "annoying charm" but now he's just annoying. he's not funny at all. he's that guy that tries way too hard and still fails at life.
  • kenny is not hot. kenny has a weird personality. kenny has women throwing themselves at him now? i don't get it.
  • stephanie has always been my least favorite character on the show. after breaking up with her boyfriend on what was supposed to be a romantic trip to italy, she decides to write a book lumping men into a number of categories called you're a great guy but... i hope the irony is not lost on the writers of this show that stephanie is most likely the problem, not the men.
am i going to continue to watch this show? yes. first of all, there are very few tv shows that i watch right now and it's nice to try to have something to look forward to. and secondly, i want to see whether or not they're going to be able to pull it out of the dumpster.

this is more important than voting for obama

okay, that subject line is a bit of a stretch but i have something very important to ask of you guys. all of you, even if you're a casual reader or just stumbled upon this blog.

if you know me, or have read a fair portion of this blog, you know that buddy is one of my favorite artists. he is an amazing songwriter and he delivers his songs with a sort of gentle intensity that can only really be understood if you've seen him live. and emphasis on the itense, really! unfortunately, at this point in his career, the buddster doesn't do a whole lot of touring. i finally saw him for the first time at sxsw this year and i literally shook like a 12 year old at a hanson concert. it was epic for me. he is backed by a group of wonderfully talented musicians that make the experience all the more breathtaking.

austin city limits music festival is having a battle of the bands contest called the sound and the jury. please go here and vote for buddy. it takes very little time and you don't have to register for anything. they do ask for your email address but that's it! oh, and they email you a link to confirm your vote. that only takes like .01 more second.

you can vote once per day from an email address. use that information as you so desire.

thanks everyone!

ps-obviously, if you aren't already listening to buddy, you should be! and now you can listen to his full length album, alterations and repairs, on the sidebar of this blog. yay!

austinist indieroke 6

this friday at 11:00 we will embark on our first austinist indieroke adventure in the mohawk green room*. this is the sixth time they've done this but, i believe, the first time it's been on a weekend night. do i think i'll sing? no. but will i have a blast watching and laughing at others? yes. you can download an excel document of the entire song list here. you know, so you're totally ready come friday night. that's still almost 3 full days to practice! i, for one, am excited about this free event. yes, free...as in "no cover." see you there!

*mohawk is located at 912 red river. there is a separate entrance to the green room, a green door located around the corner on 10th street.

baseballlll

i've been blogging a lot lately. whatevs.

jorge posada is back on the disabled list. this breaks my heart but it definitely needed to be done. he's been pretty worthless the entire season because he's been trying to play through his shoulder injury. he can't throw so he's been pretty easy to steal bases off of. the pain in his shoulder has been causing problems for him offensively as well. i think it's sad that he will probably have to miss the remainder of the last season at yankee stadium but he needs to get well so that this isn't a career ending situation.

last night jonathan papelbon got a save on a technicality. they won the game 4-0 which normally doesn't appear to be a save. however, these are the qualifications for a save:
  1. He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning
  2. He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, at bat or on deck
  3. He pitches for at least three innings
jon lester loaded the bases (clement, betancourt, and bloomquist) and one out (ichiro) before papelbon came in. so, the tying run (ibanez) was at bat and the potential go-ahead run was on deck (beltre). luckily for boston (which isn't actually lucky for me at all) ibanez grounded into a double play so they got out of that inning without a run being scored.

things are tightening up in the al east race. woo! i really can't wait until august though because that's when things get really good. although, this weekend should be nice and tense as well.

my sleep movie

when i came home from casey's last night i was completely exhausted. i uploaded some pics and caught up on the 'net then put in a movie (cruel intentions). however, due to my over active brain, i was unable to fall asleep. i hadn't taken an ambien because i felt so tired i didn't think i would need one. after cruel intentions was over i put in the old standby, lost in translation. by no means does this mean that i find it to be a boring movie because i love lost in translation. LOVE. but something about it almost always puts me to sleep (when i need to be put to sleep). i think it's a combination of the small amount of dialogue and the (mostly) ambient music (i mean, "fuck the pain away" by peaches isn't exactly ambient...good thing i'm usually asleep by the time that scene is on).

is there something that you turn to, other than pills, to help you sleep?

peeectures

a couple o' pictures from hobbs and casey's birthday party:

kathleen and jess

casey being casey

kathleen and hobbs with the cake that casey made

casey being casey...again

it's casey's birthday

and i made a random mix. sometimes i have very clear, thought out approaches to mix cds. other times i just wing it.

1. the helio sequence-hallelujah
2. black joe lewis-bitch, i love you
3. brazilian girls-pussy
4. faultline ft. wayne coyne-the colossal gray sunshine
5. ima robot-i'm a bitch for you
6. buddy-milkshake (kelis cover)
7. the brendan hines-top shelf
8. roxy music-love is the drug
9. gomez-dire tribe
10. electric six-gay bar
11. the flaming lips-can't get you out of my head (kylie minogue cover)
12. hot chip-ready for the floor
13. pinback-offline p.k.
14. scissor sisters-i don't feel like dancing

in a few hours i will head over to casey's house to help celebrate. it's also hobbs' birthday so it's a double celebration! woo!

also, last night i made a few more small changes to the ol' blog. i'm trying to keep things fresh and exciting. hahaha not really, i just got bored. the fresh prince/i love lucy poll was a total blow out so i took it down. hopefully i'll put a new one up in a couple of days, assuming i think of a good question.

from myspace:

dearest friend, family member, foe or fan.

we at jenny lewis headquarters are pleased to announce a new record. it is called acid tongue. it was recorded in january with extra love and care and will be ready for your listening pleasure this september. we will also embark on a touring journey with our friends. look out for farmer dave, barbara, mills, jw, rico and jenny. they will surely try to entertain in a city near you.

and from pitchfork:

Rilo Kiley
frontlady Jenny Lewis has announced the title of her new solo album and confirmed its impressive list of guests. The follow-up to 2006's Rabbit Fur Coat is called Acid Tongue, and it comes out via Warner Bros. in September.

As previously mentioned in an unconfirmed report, Acid Tongue features collaborations with Elvis Costello, M. Ward, Zooey Deschanel, the Black Crowes' Chris Robinson, Beachwood Sparks' "Farmer Dave" Scher, Rilo Kiley producer Jason Lader, and singer/songwriter Johnathan Rice.

Also appearing on the record are Paz Lenchantin from A Perfect Circle (and her sister Ana), Davey Faragher of Elvis Costello's Imposters, and a couple members of Lewis' family. Her sister Leslie Lewis recorded some backing vocals, and her father, Eddie Gordon, played a little harmonica.

Lewis has tour dates in September and October in support of Acid Tongue, including a handful of shows opening up for Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst.

yessss! and i'm pretty positive that dana and i are going to go to that show at la zona rosa with conor and m. ward. i can't wait!

i am literally laughing out loud

if you have even the slightest amount of appreciation for baseball or funny things (or both!) please check out these two blogs from sports hernia.

also, check out how jason giambi spent the all-star break:

what do you know?

there was a trivia question about the drew carey show tonight. and i got it right. hahah! well, mikey and i tag teamed it. the question was: on the drew carey show which character got breast implants? mikey said, "the brunette guy." and i stewed on it for a minute before scribbling down, "oswald". now, the only reason i know that guy's name is because cecily and i were just talking about how boring and similar lewis and oswald were which is not good form for sitcom sidekick characters. take george and kramer on seinfeld, they're both totally different people and get themselves into totally different situations. that's good tv!

also, a truly remarkable moment occurred when i remembered the name of the pizza place the mccallisters order from in home alone. litte nero's. sometimes things come to me that i didn't even realize i knew.

we tied for first but ended up coming in second because brady lost the wing-off. if there is a tie for first place the protocol is for one member from each team to eat 5 "fire in the hole" wings as fast as possible. whoever finishes first wins, obvy. brady did a really good job (he even ate a bone on accident!) but apparently he had more meat left on his bones than the other guy.

oh, and my favorite quote from wedding crashers made an appearance in the movie quote round: Soft mattress? Yeah, it could have been the soft mattress. Or the midnight rape. Or the nude gay art show that took place in my room. One of those probably added to the lack of sleep.

i knew it, i knew it

conor oberst, m. ward, and jenny lewis to play ACL after show

this is mostly a no-brainer if you know the history between these artists. i am skipping the festival so, ideally, i would go to that show. however, tickets go on sale saturday and i have $0 so i don't quite know what i'm going to do. boo.

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

as you can see, roseanne beat out the drew carey show in my poll. take that, dana!

i bought this gomez onesie right after my sister found out she was pregnant. i had been wanting an excuse to buy it for a long time! anyway, it finally (mostly) fits nels so we had a little photo shoot last night.

you spin me right off

earlier tonight cecily, steve and i were talking about spin off tv shows because i had an idea that they should do a spin off round at trivia one week. that would be fun! we tried to brainstorm some spin offs but we couldn't come up with many. however, the internet is ripe with that kind of information so here's a list of spin offs that i either like or am amused by:

beverly hills 90210->melrose place
buffy the vampire slayer->angel
cheers->frasier
the cosby show->a different world
diff'rent strokes->facts of life
empty nest->nurses
friends->joey
golden girls->empty nest, the golden palace
good morning, miss bliss->saved by the bell
grey's anatomy->private practice
growing pains->just the ten of us
happy days->laverne and shirley, mork and mindy, joanie loves chachi
law and order->law and order: svu, law and order: criminal intent
the mary tyler more show->rhoda, phyllis
melrose place->models, inc.
party of five->time of your life
perfect strangers->family matters
the practice->boston legal
saved by the bell->saved by the bell: the college years, saved by the bell: the new class
soap->benson
three's company->the ropers
tracy ullman show->the simpsons

holy shit, just the 10 of us?? i had forgotten ALL about that show! i used to loooove it. yes, i know there are maaany other spin offs but, to be honest, i don't care. i'm not going to list EVERY spin off ever made. these are the notable ones to ME...since this is my blog. hehe! anddd i've used the words "spin" and "off" in this entry like a million times. here they are again:

what's your favorite tv spin off?

how are you doing?

we played the arrested development drinking game last night. we only lasted 1.5 episodes before we got distracted but it was really fun while it lasted. i hadn't watched the pilot in a long time. i had completely forgotten about the scene where george michael, maeby, tobias and probably lindsay are crammed in the back seat of a car and tobias says, "we're ass to ankles back here!" that saying has always cracked me up. later, josh and i crammed into the backseat of ian's truck and i declared that we were, indeed, ass to ankles.

oh craigslist

liz brought this to my attention last night and i'm still LOLing:

I think I'm Jesus

Date: 2004-06-23, 8:15PM EDT

So I'm driving my rented metallic blue Toyota Corrolla to work this morning, when I feel the need to stop at the local Dunkin Donuts for an iced coffee. Driving along, I'm about 3 or 4 sips into the beverage, enjoying the morning, when something happened that will forever change my life. The cover suddenly jumped off the cup as the cup proceeded to flip upside down pouring the contents out, seemingly all over my lap and the console. However, after the initial shock I was confused to find no liquid on any of my clothing. After a quick further review, there was also no liquid to be found on the car seats or floor. You see, the entire iced coffee, every drop of it flowed directly into the two plastic sealed cupholders within the console. Of course the aforementioned cupholders were just large enough to house a medium iced coffee, but too small to allow me to scoop the contents out with the only tool available - the now empty Dunkin Donuts cup. I was then forced to drive quite defensively, turning was particularly challenging, as to not give gravity an excuse to overflow icey drink onto the seats or myself. That was 7 hours ago. The coffee is still there, I just don't have the heart to remove it. You see, I think all this happened for a reason, I think I may be Jesus. That coupled with the fact that I saw a horse walking on Wollaston beach today. Email me for pics (of the coffee, not the horse).

this poll was inspired by a brief conversation with dana earlier tonight. please look to your left and vote. i know there aren't many people that read my blog but what the heck!

holy crap!

so, after the mussina post you're probably asking yourselves, "could stefanie love mike mussina any more?" the answer is yes.

the yankees are using jason giambi's creepy mustache as a tagline to get people to vote him into the all-star game. support the 'stache, they're saying. so today they gave out something like 18,000 fake mustaches for the fans to wear and mike mussina got his hands on one. he has an interesting sense of humor and i love it. edit: omg i just thought of the funniest thing...moosestache. hahaha!! also, we now have fake mustaches in common.

oh yeah, vote for giambi.

enter sandman

next in my little series is mariano rivera. he's quite a likable guy as well:
  • he's from panama. i don't know why but i really like that!
  • he is the last active player in all of major league baseball to wear the number 42. it was retired throughout mlb in honor of jackie robinson in 1997 but since mo was already wearing it, he was "grandfathered" and was able to continue to use it.
  • he enters ballgames to "enter sandman" by metallica.
  • his pitching glove is inscribed with a reference to philippians 4:13 ("I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.")
  • he is arguably the best closer in the history of baseball and is destined to end up the the baseball hall of fame.
  • as of july 5 he had 466 saves. that's A LOT of saves, yo!
  • unlike mike mussina, i wouldn't call mo "hot" but he has a certain intimidation factor that makes him fun to watch.
  • he's a 9x all-star
  • no matter how many times batters see his cut fastball, most of them still can't hit it.
i'm not gushy about mo because i don't see him the same way i see moose. i tend to objectify mussina a little but i have much more respect for mariano to do that. he's just a class act.

music babble

this is what i've been listening to lately. some are new favorites and some are old favorites.
  • fleet foxes
  • the helio sequence
  • mgmt
  • girl talk
  • buddy
  • the brendan hines
  • gomez (this probably seems silly for someone like me to mention but i actually haven't listened to gomez in quite a while. i've been having some personal issues with listening to gomez but i should probably save that for another blog.)
  • black joe lewis (i will continue to blog about this guy until you people take notice and check him out! he's fantastic!)
  • holly conlan (if you hurry, you can grab her song "you are goodbye" for free from itunes!)
i also really love the last EP that joseph arthur released, vagabond skies. i think i've already mentioned this but it's my favorite of the 3 that he's put out so far this year. the 4th and final EP comes out tomorrow, then a full album with the band in september. wooo!

ben kweller recorded a new album back in september with jim eno (of spoon [black joe lewis also just recorded an album with him]) but it hasn't been released yet. last i heard his contract with ATO records was up and he was trying to decide what to do from there; re-sign with ATO, shop around for a new label, or just release it himself. i think it's supposed to be out in september but i won't make any promises because i don't really know.

gomez is working on a new album this year. they've had one recording session in chicago and will be heading back next month to finish it up. who the hell knows when it's going to be released though. it's just been announced that they are going to play their debut album, bring it on (1998), in its entirety in manchester and london in september. last year ben kweller played 3 nights in brooklyn where he played each of his albums from start to finish, one each night. it was such a success that he did it again in LA about a month later. i thought that was a fascinating idea for a show and have been wanting gomez to do it ever since. unfortunately i won't be seeing either of these gomez shows but i'm still excited at the prospect of hearing a recording of it.

i think that's about all i have to say for now.

i heart moose

last night kate was telling me how she trusts my opinion on a lot of things but she cannot get behind my love of the yankees. that's totally understandable but i feel that there are probably a few yankees she would love individually if she "got to know" them. first on that list is mike mussina. i would be interested to meet someone that doesn't like him, actually. here are some reasons why i love the moose:
  • let's get the superficial stuff out of the way first. he's fucking hot, alright!
  • he graduated with an economics degree from stanford in under 4 years
  • the 2006 documentary wordplay taught us all that mike mussina does the new york times crossword puzzle (also, i really like that movie and not just because mussina is in it)
  • he enters ballgames to "the zoo" by the scorpions!
  • and this is stolen straight from wikipedia: He is fifth among all active pitchers in wins (260), shutouts (23) and complete games (57), seventh in strikeouts (2,705) and innings (3,437.2), eighth in batters faced (13,886), ninth in BB/9 IP (2.018), and tenth in win-loss percentage (.633). His 260 wins are the most by any pitcher never to have a 20 win season.
  • he keeps a dry erase board in the clubhouse that he writes little messages on. when joe girardi became manager he took away the sweets from the clubhouse. they used to munch on ice cream, candy, donuts...stuff like that and girardi decided that wasn't really helping them. apparently mussina made a deal with girardi regarding wins and sweets because after his 10th win the dry erase board said, "the ice cream is back." when he reaches 12 wins they get the donuts back and there is a possibility that candy could be back after his 15th win.
  • he's hilarious. i was listening to a press conference thingie with him yesterday and he was talking about how if he didn't get selected to go to the all-star game he would just go home to PA and go to the county fair. they have tractor pulls and a demolition derby. haha! looks like he'll be going to that because he isn't going to the all-star game :(
i could probably go on for a while longer but really, these are great reasons to love moose.

i stole that complete list from peter abraham. i love to copy and paste. oh, and here's the final vote list stolen from the same blog:

AMERICAN LEAGUE
Jermaine Dye, White Sox
Jason Giambi, Yankees
Jose Guillen, Royals
Evan Longoria, Rays
Brian Roberts, Orioles

NATIONAL LEAGUE
Pat Burrell, Phillies
Corey Hart, Brewers
Carlos Lee, Astros
Aaron Rowand, Giants
David Wright, Mets

i suggest you go vote for carlos lee and jason giambi here. don't vote for david wright, carlos lee is just as good!

some random thoughts on the asg (that stands for all-star game, like you didn't know) rosters:

-there are lots of cubs playing in the game.

-mike mussina got shafted a little but i guess i understand. terry francona did a great job of picking non red sox players.

-the players in the american league might be slightly idiotic since they voted jason varitek in...he's batting .218 or something right now. as much as i hate aj pierzynski, i'd rather see him in there because he's having a better season than varitek so far.

-even though i told you to vote for jason giambi, i kind of think evan longoria should be the final vote for the AL. i'm quite surprised he wasn't voted in to beging with.

-good to see chipper jones in there for the first time in like 7 years! i loves me some chipper.

in other baseball(ish) news, i'm really fucking tired of the viva viagra commercials that i see 10 million times during every baseball game i watch on tv. oh, you don't know what commercials i'm talking about?

i hate shitty music

several of my friends and i failed to buy tickets to see fleet foxes at mohawk so we decided to go to club deville and listen from there since it's right next door. club deville gave us the big "fuck you" by having shitty music (a dj and a band) outside all night so we couldn't hear fleet foxes. i tried to entertain myself by taking "head shots" of carlos but he wasn't very cooperative. the last one is a pose that he does that i like to call the e-harmony pose. this particular one turned out kinda sleazy.

we finally left deville because it sucked ass and went to side bar. we ran into an old friend who had actually been at the show and he said it was really fantastic. boo.

mem'ries

bri and i were just having a conversation in comments on one of brynn's pictures on facebook. this strawberry picture, to be exact:

we were reminiscing about the day it was taken (i took it, btw). let's go over what went down that day july 13, 2007 (woah i just realized it was friday the 13th, weird!):

  • we (me, jen, brynn, and bri) woke up in dallas
  • ate breakfast at denny's (we were staying at la quinta, which everyone knows means "next to denny's" not "free internet")
  • hit i-45 south headed towards houston
  • drove past this creepy statue of sam houston (i didn't take that picture)
  • stopped at a roadside stand and bought strawberries and some other fruit (my mind is totally blanking on the other fruit right now)
  • arrived at a super 8 in the woodlands...the room was hotter than hell and smelled like urine
  • went to a nearby barn/restaurant/bar thing for pre-drinks and dinner
  • headed out in search of orange stoli for a certain drummer
  • went into a totally ghetto liquor store that did NOT have orange stoli
  • found spec's liquor on the gps navigator (this was RIGHT before spec's opened in austin so i wasn't familiar with them) we walked in to find a stoli tasting which was basically free shots of stoli
  • got d-runk at the woodlands and watched brynn and bri get kicked out of the venue
  • went back to barn/restaurant/bar and discovered it was karaoke night
  • sang jolene, head over heels, and how we operate (totally appropriate since that was the song playing when the girls got escorted out of the show) much to the crowd's dismay...everyone else was singing country songs
  • ordered sprites at the bar and poured tito's out of my purse into the cup
  • bri chased a frog half the night
  • stopped at walgreen's and stocked up on microwavable foods such as burritos, mac and cheese, and popcorn and stuffed ourselves before passing out
if i have to go to houston, i want it to be like that. never a dull moment. now i'll leave you with this picture of me, bri, and brynn singing head over heels. word to the wise: do not try to karaoke that song. it might sound like a good idea but it's not. the last 2 minutes dragged on like schindler's list and the crowd of country fans looked like they were ready to kill us.

and due to a lovely response all over the interwebz, i believe i'll be making a small series where i take a look back at a certain date in my history (mostly from last summer) and write about it here. it will be fun for everyone, i swear!
