do your ears a favor v1.2

merriweather post pavilion by animal collective. hooooly crap, people. this is all i've listened to since probably saturday. it is legen-wait for it--dary! and it doesn't hurt that they have a song about me. come one, mean with curly hair? who else could that be??

but seriously, i can already tell that this album is going to be at the top of many best of 2009 lists. i know that sounds really presumptious but it's just that good. plus, i don't think any of the albums set to come out this year stand a chance against this one.

black joe lewis and the honey bears!

i'm blog crazy today! i'm taking a break from a serious overhaul of my bedroom to bring you this news:

yessssssssss! it's been FOREVER since we've seen our honeybears. and i'm pumped about the new material! this is not to be missed, guys. and even though i've had a link on the lh side bar of this blog FOREVER, here it is again. so head on over there and listen to some tunes!

also, three olives vodka...i have a couple of interesting tidbits about three olives. i'm not sure if they still are, but about 2 years ago they were the only company that made grape vodka. i am not a fan of grape vodka (it reminds me of children's cold medicine...blech!) but kelly used to loooooves him some grape vodka shots. probably still does. and lastly, we went to a vodka bar in denver and i had a three olives cherry vodka and tonic with lime. do you know what that roughly equals? CHERRY LIMEADE, BITCHES. it was so delicious. i could have downed about 10 of them in 30 minutes. soooo tasty and dangerous. anyway, that's all i have to say about three olives.

some things i would like to own v1.2

here are a couple more things that i would like to own.

i can't remember if i've mentioned it here before, but MANY people that know me know i've been wanting a slanket for a long time. i saw it in sky mall in the fall of 2007 and haven't been able to stop thinking about it! and don't even try to mention the snuggie to me. the slanket is totally where it's at! it looks like it's way more comfortable than the shitty material used to make the snuggie. plus, the snuggie commercials annoy the living shit out of me.

that picture is kind of hard to see, but it's a set of ojamas. obama pajamas! aside from the fact that i could probably NEVER sleep in a long-sleeved shirt, i would love to own these. but there is a simple solution to that, they sell just the pants! awww yeah.

listen to changing horses

this album comes out in 8 days but you can listen to the whole thing over at last.fm. i heard a lot of these songs when i saw him back in november. i really like this album. i don't know how it is going to be received by the masses but i don't really think ben gives a shit about that. he made an album that had been inside of him for a long time and that's probably good enough for him. i was raised on some of the same music ben was so i think these songs are great. a couple of years ago i saw ben several times when he was touring with gomez. he was covering "chug a lug" by roger miller on that tour. i was so excited every time he played it but most of the crowds didn't seem to recognize it. it was particularly funny when he played it in vancouver! i have my father to thank for knowing all those silly roger miller songs :)

and don't forget about this!

some things i would like to own

these items have recently been added to my amazon wishlist (which can be found at the top left of my blog. haha!) i don't expect anyone to buy any of them for me, but i thought some of you might be interested in my discoveries (in case you don't already know about them).

you know, so i can cut out my fisheye pictures without butchering them with my shaky scissor hands!

i realize that i might be one of about 3 people that actually liked be kind rewind but this book seems pretty interesting to me. and if you hated the movie, i don't want to hear about it.

i'm still pissed that darjeeling limited hasn't been released on criterion but at least bottle rocket finally has. that gives me hope for darjeeling, some day. damn fox!

a fun print

i've been meaning to post about this for a while now but kept forgetting. i printed some of my most recent pics from san francisco in black and white. they're 5x5 prints with white borders. the cool thing about the 5x5 prints is that they print on 6 in. paper so there's an inch to trim off. buuuut with the white borders, and that extra inch at the bottom, they look like giant polaroids! i scanned one so you can see what i'm talking about.

i printed quite a few of them and i'm currently working on a way to make a big wall display out of them. anyway, it's just something fun that i thought i would share with y'all. if you want to do these, go to a ritz or wolf and order your prints 5x5 with borders, and tell the lab employee NOT to trim them. also, make sure you manually crop the images into a square, otherwise it automatically crops right down the middle and sometimes that doesn't yield the best results. you can convert your images to black and white, or leave them in color. i just thought the black and white made these pictures less life-like and more dream-like, which is something that i wanted for this project.

better late than never, right?

here is a list of my favorite albums of 2008. it's not in any sort of order though because i'm far too indecisive for that shit.

mgmt-oracular spectacular
bon iver-for emma, forever ago
jenny lewis-acid tongue
joseph arthur and the lonely astronauts-temporary people
she & him-volume one
the helio sequence-keep your eyes ahead
conor oberst-conor oberst
portugal. the man-censored colors
fleet foxes-fleet foxes
vampire weekend-vampire weekend
girl talk-feed the animals
my morning jacket-evil urges
david byrne and brian eno-everything that happens will happen today

i think that's about it. it's a fairly solid list. i forgot how much good music came out last year!

bars serve booze?

apd released a list of the top bars in austin linked with dwi arrests from 2008. the information is based on what the people told the cops when they were arrested. here's the list:

1. rain
2. oilcan harry's
3. the ranch
4. lucky lounge
5. cedar street
6. the library
7. third base
8. blind pig
9. club rodeo
10. union park
11. antone's
12. fado
13. shakespeare's
14. maggie mae's
15. key bar
16. gruv
17. emo's
18. gingerman
19. speakeasy
20. j. black's
21. charlie's
22. fuel
23. doc's
24. lavaca street
25. molotov
26. jackalope
27. continental club

i'm not sure what it means that the top 2 bars are gay bars. probably nothing. it's nice to know that none of my 7th street bars are on that list. the only places on that list that i go to with any sort of frequency are emo's and jackalope. at least 15 of those bars are douchey to the max.

i think that most of this is based on the patrol habits of the cops. but i do find it odd that emo's is the only place on red river that is listed though. but that's good!

dinner with ben kweller?

ben kweller is finally releasing his new album, changing horses, next month. to celebrate the release of the album, ben has a little sweepstakes thing going on. check out this video for more information:

that's a fun idea. man, it sure would be easy for him if someone from austin won. i wonder if the winner gets to pick the restaurant?

do you have a favorite day?

while going through my pictures from 2008 and reading back in my journal, i started to think about this day last february that could go down in my history book as one of the greatest days ever. nothing huge happened that day, and maybe that's why it was so wonderful. josh recently changed his facebook picture to this one, and breanna commented that it looked like "pure happiness" and it was.

we had gone out the night before, i think to creekside, and woke up feeling surprisingly good considering the amount of drinks consumed the previous night. we met up with dana and ian at z tejas for brunch. brunch wasn't awesome because my order got messed up twice, but it was still fun. after brunch, dana, josh and i went to target. i can't remember why we went there in the first place. maybe josh needed socks? i don't know. but i decided to buy a bubble machine and dana bought a 2 foot frisbee. we went back to josh's, got some cds and the laptop, and headed to the courtyard at his apartment complex. the following pictures depict that afternoon.

maybe some people experience fun like that all the time. i don't think we do. but i think that we should. why should "pure happiness" depend on what you're wearing or where you're going or what you're going to do once you get there? if you're in good company, why can't every day be this great? i recently resolved to be more fun in 2009. it sounds simple, and i hope that it will be. this resolution isn't just for myself, but for those around me. i don't want to be the downer, complainer anymore. lately i've found myself being dissatisfied with events that should be fun. i don't know why that is but i'm going to make an effort to have a good time rather than sitting around thinking, "i should be having more fun than this." i'm never going to be happy if i am constantly thinking something should be more than it is.

so now i'll leave you with a question. do you have a favorite day? it can be your favorite day for any reason. it can be huge or small. or whatever it is that made it your favorite.

2008 in pictures

here are some of my favorite moments of 2008. hopefully i'll get around to summing up the year and maybe i'll write about my favorite albums of 2008 as well. anyway, enjoy the pictures.
