i used to blog about baseball

another quick blog before i go to bed because it's on my mind. i used to love to write about baseball. i also used to LOVE to watch baseball. the fact that everyone is or could be on steroids has seriously jaded me though. i just cannot bring myself to invest so much time and emotion in something that might all be a charade. i feel foolish each time information about a player using steroids comes out. as our last president said, "fool me once...uhh, shame on you. fool me...can't get fooled again!" instead of giving players the benefit of the doubt, i'll just have to assume that everyone who plays well is juicing. it's the only way to not be disappointed. okay, that's a bit extreme and i don't really feel that way but a gal's got to do something to keep her heart from being broken again, right? anyway, that was kind of a long way to explain why i can't quite bring myself to write about the sport anymore.

my friend kim wrote this about manny ramirez and how he's still receiving lots of votes for the all-star game. i agree with pretty much everything she said. except for all that fluff about the astros ;)

so yeah, maybe someday i'll get over myself and blog about baseball again. not that you care.

it's about to get crazy!

back in april i had a three-night-run of events. much to my surprise, it wasn't as bad as i was anticipating. and by bad, i just mean utterly exhausting. well, starting this coming wednesday, i have 6 concerts to attend in 8 days. i have to work 4 out of those 8 days as well. so that's shows wednesday (passion pit), thursday (helio sequence), and friday (animal collective) with the weekend off (but not off from work! and i have inventory sunday night...boo!), then gomez monday (stubb's plus an in-store at waterloo), tuesday (warehouse live), and wednesday (house of blues). so the last part of the insanity is not just concerts but also a small roadtrip. tuesday we'll drive from austin to houston, wednesday we'll drive from houston to dallas, and thursday we'll drive from dallas to austin. it's not a terrible amount of time on the road, thank god! you may find yourselves wondering why on earth i would go see gomez 3 nights in a row. well, it's something that i can't explain. you either get it or you don't. fortunately, my friend bonnie gets it and she will be my partner in crime for this trip. as you can see, the last time gomez "did" texas, things got silly. hopefully this trip won't involve a speeding ticket!

i will try my best to take lots of fun pictures. i will also try to remember as many details as possible to write about later. that isn't really for y'all but some people might enjoy it anyway. it's mostly for myself so i can look back on it later when my memories start to fade. anyway, i will leave you all with my fortune from tonight's panda express dinner. i shall keep this in mind :)

keep your expectations reasonable

stuff i love 1

i've decided to add a new weekly feature to the ol' blog: stuff i love. hopefully i'll manage to post it every tuesday but forgive me if i don't. some weeks i might post about multiple things that i love, other weeks i might just focus on one. "stuff" can be defined as just about anything. could be people, places, food, a song, a hair product...who knows! i find that i spend too much time writing and talking about things i don't like and that's no way to live. hopefully this weekly post will give me, and maybe some of you, a reason to think about all the things that are out there to love. i don't want to be too cheesy about this though! after all, i am still a judgmental bitch. so, without further ado, here is this week's installment of stuff i love.

yes, folks, it's that time...the scripps national spelling bee! last year's showdown between samir mishra and siddharth chand was AWESOME! i was rooting for samir the whole time so i was extremely excited when he was able to correctly spell "guerdon" after sidharth missed it. i'm off work tomorrow so i intend to watch the preliminaries on espn starting at 1:15 eastern. i'll miss the semifinals on thursday but you can bet you'll find me watching the finals on thursday night! i just love watching them "write" the words on the back of their contestant cards. i highly recommend watching the bee at some point in the next three days. it's so much more entertaining than you might think it is!

edit: i misread the spelling bee website. today's preliminaries are on espn360.com, not on tv. lame. boo!

come see some shows with me!

here's an updated list of the upcoming concerts i'm going to. comment here if you're going to any of these!

i'm toying with the idea of going to see gomez and blind pilot at the fillmore in san francisco july 30 and 31. i don't know if i will but i sure would like to. i was so jealous of my friends who got to see blind pilot open for gomez in philadelphia!

bamboo sucks

last night, while making the trek from 38th and avenue f to 30th and hampton (which isn't that far but it felt far!) we encountered a small bamboo forest. a bamboo tunnel, if you will. it reminded me of all the bamboo that is just down the street from my house that someone planted 20+ years ago. it has managed to weasel its way into the yards bordering it. i wandered down and took some pictures of it today for funsies. i just can't figure out why anyone would plant bamboo. do any of you have a clue why people plant bamboo?

welcome, cupcake!

for several days i've driven past an airstream trailer with the hey cupcake! logo on it. it's parked by thundercloud at 4 points (620&2222). i couldn't figure out if they were opening a location there or what! i searched all over the internet and couldn't find any information about it. well, last night when i turned onto 620 from 2222 i saw a cupcake on top of the trailer! and lights! and an "open" sign! and lots of people in line! so i guess there is a hey cupcake! by my house now. i am stoked. i found it a little odd that they opened one up there but i guess since it's practically summer and lots of people drive that stretch of highway coming and going from the lake, they figured it could be a lucrative spot. i hope it is. i know i'll be spending money there!

i never win anything!

just the other day i was complaining how i never win anything. i enter the austinist free ticket contests pretty much every time they have one and i've never won. a couple of weeks ago dana won the black joe lewis ticket giveaway. then on monday, alicia won the elvis perkins giveaway. not fair! but today, my "never winning anything" came to an end.

on wednesday one of my co-workers called in sick. for the next couple of days instead of coming in at 11:00 like he was scheduled, he came in at 10:00 to try to make up some hours from being sick. yesterday i decided if he was going to come in at 10:00 again then i was going to come in at 11:00. i spent the night at my sister's house last night and left around 10:32 to head to work. the radio was on bob fm and some terrible song was playing. i put it on kgsr just as barbara jo was saying, "text "DELL" to 68704 for your chance to win tickets to see bob dylan, willie nelson, and john mellencamp. texter #107 wins." so i thought, "what the hell?" jason and i had talked about going to that show until we saw the ticket prices. $80*!? too rich for my blood. so i sent the text and got a reply that said, "107.1 kgsr-you're texter 29. keep trying." so i sent it again and my reply said, "107.1 kgsr-you're texter 74. keep trying." keep in mind that those first 2 texts were sent within about 20 seconds of each other. so i figured that by the time i sent another text the contest would be over. i sent one anyway and this was the reply i got, "congrats! you are texter 107. call so and so with kgsr promotions on monday morning to redeem your prize."

I WON?! i couldn't believe it! and then i got to thinking that if my co-worker hadn't been sick on wednesday, i would have already been at work and wouldn't have even known about the contest. crazy, huh?

so yeah, i'm going to see bob dylan, willie nelson, and john mellencamp at the dell diamond on august 4. that's pretty exciting!!

*i say $80 because they're $68 through ticketmaster and those bastards always charge A LOT in fees. i don't know the exact cost of the tickets though.

price discrepancy

i love tito's vodka. it is my liquor of choice. and i don't just like it because it's cheap, i actually prefer the taste to pretty much any other vodka. my favorite ways to enjoy it are mixed with cranberry juice, tonic, or blood orange italian soda.

i get a little frustrated when i go out of state and can't have my tito's. i also get a little frustrated when bars charge an arm and a leg for a cocktail with tito's. the other night at the parish, they ran out of tito's! i was a bit flabbergasted when the bartender told me that so i just stood there for a second and then she said, "stoli and absolut are the same price as tito's..." as if to suggest something else for me to order. now, i know that drinks at concerts are always more expensive than drinks at regular ol' bars but lumping tito's into the same price point as stoli and aboslut? that is ridiculous! i did a little bit of price hunting and found these figures for all 3 of those brands in 750ml bottles:

tito's $17.99
stoli $23.99
absolut $25.99

now, pricing obviously differs depending on where you're buying and whatnot so those are just rough figures...but still! that is a noticeable difference in price. shame on you, parish, for charging so much for tito's when it costs you so little! also, shame on you for running out of it!

wilco (the stream)

wilco has a new album coming out in june! it leaked on tuesday night and in response to that, the band has put a stream of it up on their website. i am in love with this album. i think i might like it better than sky blue sky. immediate favorites are "you and i" (duet with feist) and "i'll fight". i also cannot wait to hear "bull black nova" live because i can tell it's going to be one of those epic live songs like spiders.

so, in conclusion, stop whatever you're doing and head over to listen to the stream. and listen to it all day long. that's what i did yesterday and will probably do again today.

interview with fil

check out this interview with fil krohnengold about operation aloha. also, a few days ago i wrote that operation aloha would be on carson daly tonight. that has been changed and their performance will now be airing thursday night.

i still wish i was in LA today to see them :(

weeknight concerts

i used to think that austin could schedule a concert any night of the week and still have great crowds. now, i'm not so sure. the first red flag for me was spoon at scoot inn a couple of weeks ago. the crowd was very low energy and the only thing i could think to blame it on was the fact that it was a tuesday night.

last night, for elvis perkins in dearland, the parish decided to up the ante on mellow crowds by putting CHAIRS on the floor in front of the stage. as if a monday night crowd wasn't going to be mellow enough? everyone sitting in the chairs looked like they were either asleep or half asleep for most of the show, despite the fact that most of the songs they played were rather upbeat. i hate when people use the term "fail" but this is the prime time to use it. the "seated" tickets were the same price as regular GA tickets but since i had NO idea what "seated" meant for the parish, i didn't buy one. a few people with seats ended up standing in front of the stage but for the most part, the area in front of the stage was deadsville.

another awful side effect of the chairs was that we all had to stand around the perimeter of the venue...where all the talkers hang out. a couple songs in they played my favorite e.p. song called "emile's vietnam in the sky" and the two old dudes in front of me talked the entire way through it. i was already planning to ask them to either be quiet or move to the back when carlos told me he would buy me a drink if i confronted them about the talking. score! i was very polite to them and one of them was really apologetic but the other one was kind of a dick. they ended up moving a few minutes later. i was relieved until...the bros took over their spot. a bunch of fratty, douchey guys stood right in front of us and talked a lot. about stupid shit. they were so super annoying so we ended up having to move. so that's another reason why chairs at the parish sucks: real fans are forced to stand to the side with the talkers. booo.

other than the talkers, there was NOTHING happening in the crowd. no dancing, or head bobbing, or anything. it was really off-putting. it just makes me wonder what that show would have been like on a saturday night? austin is supposed to be the "live music capital of the world" but recently it hasn't felt like the residents are living up to it.

who//what//where

if you're in the austin area you should check out this photography exhibit next friday, may 15th. an extremely talented friend of mine will have an image included in the exhibit. it should be a good time!

happy birthday, nels!!

can you believe that my little nephew is a year old today? i sure can't! it's amazing how much babies change in 12 months. his birthday party is on saturday and i'm certain i'll take many, many adorable pictures!

the final keep me up

a while back i posted this video of the mentalists covering mgmt's kids using only iphones and ipod touches. making music using iphone applications is the wave of the future, apparently.

recently members of gomez olly peacock, ben ottewell, ian ball and sound engineer graham pattison spent an evening recording some songs using iphones and the result is the final keep me up. i'm really curious about how they came up with the project name and the names for the songs. it's all very fascinating to me for some reason. anyway, check it out if you want to hear these guys channel their inner-eno.

mission: affection, love, peace, compassion and mercy

a few years ago christopher wray-mccann hatched a plan to get his favorite musician friends to gather in hawaii and record some music. somehow, the stars aligned and they were all able to take off to hawaii for a month and thus, operation aloha was born. operation aloha consists of the following artists:

dajon everett (gomez)
ian ball (gomez)
james valentine (maroon 5)
jesse carmichael (maroon 5)
olly peacock (gomez)
sam farrar (phantom planet)
christopher wray-mccann (photographer)
charles danek
fil krohnengold (all spots to black) (as well as many other acts he contributes to)
mathew chaney
mauren wray-mccann
nadav kahn (kahn brothers)
saam gabbay
will nash

i highly suggest checking out the songs, pictures, and videos on the website. it's all so breathtakingly beautiful! the electronic press kit is fantastic but if you have the time, you should deifnitely watch the "words and images" video. it's about 13 minutes long but very interesting. the whole thing looks like it was such an amazing and unique experience for everyone involved. it's probably something that could never really be duplicated.

if you happen to be in the LA area, some of the members of operation aloha will be performing at the troubadour on may 12, the day the album is being released. if you go, be sure to get there early enough to see all spots to black! and if you're like me, and NOT in the LA area, you can catch them on carson daly thursday night.

i can't wait to own this album!

musical memories are the strongest for me

Put all your music on shuffle, list and explain the first 15 songs with a memory attached.

okay, most of my memories are either from live shows or they're memories of an entire album. whatever.

1. badly drawn boy-a peak you reach in may of 2002 my parents and i flew up to grand rapids for my sister's graduation from calvin college. about a boy was coming out in theaters that weekend and i had just finished reading the book. my sister's friend dan burned me a copy of the soundtrack while i was there and i listened to it on my disc man as i was falling asleep each night. later in the weekend cecily, sarah and i went to see the movie. the whole weekend was really nice and every time i hear any song from that soundtrack, my mind is taken back to that time.

2. the redwalls-falling down in july 2005 i went to lollapalooza in chicago with my sister and her husband. it was the first year they they produced it as a festival and it was only 2 days. on the first day we walked in and stopped at the first stage we came to. the redwalls were playing and none of us had ever heard of them before. i was hooked instantly. later that same year i saw them play at emo's with hot hot heat. it was a fantastic night!

3. modest mouse-trailer trash in may of 2007 i went to see modest mouse at the backyard. that show ended up getting shutdown early because of rain (even though the tickets said rain or shine!) but before they shut 'er down, modest mouse played trailer trash and it was incredible. dancing to that song in the rain is one of my most favorite concert memories.

4. liz phair-only son i bought whitechocolatespaceegg at a used cd store at 620 and 183 the summer after i turned 16. this song just reminds me of driving around in my red 2-door honda civic that summer

5. brendan hines-parcel post last february my friend dani suggested i buy his album, good for you know who. so i did. that night i went out with some friends and had a particularly crappy night but listening to brendan hines on the drive home really cheered me up.

6. jimmy durante-make someone happy when i was 10 my dad worked for a homebuilder who also owned some video rental stores. they used to get all kinds of movie related stuff in the office and one of the things they got was a cassette tape of the sleepless in seattle soundtrack. the songs that really stand out in my memory are make someone happy and bye bye blackbird.

7. the yeah yeah yeahs-y control my only real memory of this song is singing it at lori and robin's old apartment.

8. david garza-disco ball world high school high school high school high school! seriously, if i could pick one song that i associate the most with high school, it's probably this one.

9. bob dylan and willie nelson-heartland this song is off an album that we used to listen to on our summer roadtrips. it reminds me of being cramped in a mini-van for hours upon hours, sleeping in a hot tent, and taking in all sorts of beautiful scenery in the western united states.

10. the vapors-turning japanese one of my only real memories from seeing ian ball at cafe du nord in october 2007 is repeatedly requesting this song (apparently at a loud volume). i still think ian would sound great covering it!

11. the band-theme from the last waltz in february 2006 kelly and i drove to houston to see coldplay. we stayed at the magnolia hotel, which was very nice. the morning after the concert was rough, to say the least. i turned on the tv and flipped channels for 5 or 10 minutes. as i landed on ifc for probably the 10th time, the last waltz was starting up. rather then getting up and heading back to austin right away like we had planned, we stayed in bed and watched the whole movie. whenever i think back on that day, i'm filled with happiness and comfort.

12. calvin harris-acceptable in the 80s a few months ago dana and i were chatting while watching law and order: svu. here is an excerpt from that chat:

Stefanie: good god, marital rape was legal  until the 80s??
Dana: haha oh man
Dana: i listened to this song today "acceptable in the 80s"
Dana: maybe it was about that
Stefanie: oh calvin harris?
Dana: haha yes
Stefanie: that's a catchy tune
Dana: yeah i like it
Dana: esp since i was born in the 80s
Stefanie: you were?
Dana: nope

so after that, acceptable in the 80s made me think of marital rape. not a great thing to think of but it's a funny story.

13. death cab for cutie-brothers on a hotel bed i honestly cannot remember how or why this got into my head but every time i hear this song, or even read/think about it, i think about my name is earl because earl and randy share a bed in a hotel room.

14. the decemberists-o new england i downloaded all of the songs from the bridesmaid series or whatever the hell they're called from an illegal leak. yeah, i said it. anyway, carlos and i went to see the d's at southwestern shortly after that and they played this song. so now this song reminds me of sitting in the bleachers in a gym that looked remarkably  like my high's school gym. yes, we had to sit in the bleachers because grandpa had torn his acl the day before.

15. ryan adams-come pick me up in october of 2007 i went to san francisco to visit my california homies and see ian ball. meghan, matt, and dani were sleeping on air mattresses in the office so i took the couch. after the show, everyone else went to bed except for kerry and me. we turned on the tv and ended up watching part of elizabethtown. the only thing i really remember before falling asleep was hearing this song. it always reminds me of kerry.
